Israeli Leaders Stand in Solidarity Against Anti-Semitism: Historic Synagogue Visit in Moldova
On April 11th, Rabbi Michael Malchieli, Israel’s Minister of Religious Services, along with Dr. Yoel Leon, Israel’s Ambassador to Moldova, made a significant visit to the iconic Lubavitcher Chabad Central Synagogue, fondly referred to as the “Glazer Shul.”
The visit took place against the backdrop of a recent incident of anti-Semitism. Ambassador Leon expressed unity, saying, “We stand together with Moldova’s Chief Rabbi Axelrod. Israel is committed to tackling this issue across the nation. Anti-Semitism reflects broader challenges in society, and we offer our support, hoping for better days ahead.”
Minister Malchieli addressed the gathered community leaders, delivering a strong message: “This attack targets not only Rabbi Axelrod but the entire Jewish community. You’re nurturing the fourth generation of Chabad shluchim in this land. Rabbi Axelrod’s grandfather, the esteemed Rabbi Zalman Abelsky z’l, served as the Moldovan chief rabbi for nearly 26 years. The responsibility of preserving the Jewish legacy has been carried by you and your ancestors. We’re here to support and empower you. May you continue to lead with strength and conviction. We stand with you against anti-Semitism.”
At the Rabbinical Conference in Kishinev, Minister Malchieli participated actively. Rabbi Zushe Abelsky, head of the Chabad Jewish community, outlined a resilience plan against anti-Semitism. Their response includes hosting a Seder night—a symbolic tradition—and distributing aid across 18 Moldovan communities. Rabbi Abelsky affirmed, “These attempts to discourage us only strengthen our commitment to spreading light, unity, and performing good deeds.”
After the meeting, Minister Malchieli joined in the food drive and Matzo distribution, personally engaging in the act of giving out food packages, participating in the Mitzvah.
