Lag B’Omer 5785 in Kishinev, Moldova: A Parade of Joy, Drums, Bonfire, and Jewish Pride

In the streets of Kishinev, Moldova’s capital, the air was filled with the sound of drums, joyful singing, and children’s voices. The community came together to celebrate Lag B’Omer 5785 with a lively parade, a traditional bonfire, and uplifting Jewish energy.

The event was led by Chabad Shluchim — Rabbi Shmuel Zalmanov and Rabbi Shneur Zalman Tiefenbrun — with strong support from a dedicated team of local volunteers.

At the front of the parade marched drummers, setting the rhythm with vibrant energy. Behind them, children followed proudly, holding colorful signs and loudly proclaiming the 12 Pesukim. As they made their way through Kishinev’s main streets, the city witnessed a moving display of Jewish pride and unity.

Following the parade, families traveled to Vatra Strămoșească Park in the Dănceni area for the main celebration. There, the park buzzed with excitement — inflatables and playgrounds for kids, a glowing bonfire, music, dancing, and a festive meal. Children laughed and played, while parents sang and clapped along. Altogether, the atmosphere was warm, joyful, and full of Jewish spirit.

During the celebration, Chief Rabbi of Moldova, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Axelrod, lit the bonfire alongside Mr. Simcha Bozor, President of the Chabad Jewish Community of Kishinev. Both offered words of blessing and encouragement to inspire the crowd.

Importantly, the entire event was made possible thanks to the generous support of Mr. Emanuel Grinshpun, in memory of his beloved father, Yisrael ben Meir HaCohen, of blessed memory. The timing was especially meaningful, as the celebration took place on his yahrzeit — the 17th of Iyar.

Reflecting on the event, Rabbi Zushe Abelsky, Head Shliach of Chabad Moldova, shared:
“I organized Kishinev’s first-ever Lag B’Omer parade during the fall of Communism. That act led to my expulsion from the country. Today, I see the same parade taking place on the same streets — now with police escort and public support. It’s not just a personal full circle. It’s the Rebbe’s vision come to life — Jewish revival in Moldova.”
