During renovation work at the Great Synagogue in Kishinev, the capital of Moldova, an ancient archive was discovered on the roof.
It should be noted that this is the only synagogue in Moldova that continued to function even during the time of the infamous KGB, who destroyed over seventy synagogues in the capital city alone. All that is left of these other synagogues are just a few ruins.
In the archive found on the roof are dozens of bags of remains of sifrei Torah, tefillin, Ark curtains, and many pages of holy books. Due to their advanced age, many of these items are in a severe state of decay.
