LAG B’omer in Kishinev: When a March and a Turkish Barbecue Bring Joy and Unity
In Kishinev, hundreds of the city’s Jews – men, women, and children from the kindergarten and the Chabad school – gathered for the lively LAG B’omer parade, filling the central streets of Moldova’s capital with unity and spirit. The parade showcased the strength and solidarity of the Jewish community.
After the parade, participants gathered at the “La Grama” campsite for a festive evening. The event featured a traditional bonfire, joyful dancing, and a barbecue with a special twist of Turkish flavors, masterfully prepared by renowned chef Khalil. This unique addition added a delightful dimension to the celebration.
As the sun set and the bonfire blazed, the children of Tzivos Hashem recited the 12 Pesukim. Attendees then enjoyed moving messages from the Chief Rabbi of Moldova, Rabbi Mendel Axelrod, and the Chabad Shliach, Rabbi Shmuel Zalmanov. Their speeches emphasized the importance of community, faith, and resilience, resonating deeply with everyone present.
Zushe, a student from Poltava who moved to Kishinev due to the war in Ukraine, shared his experience: “It’s always gratifying to connect with a new community, no matter where we are. But in Kishinev, there is a special joy. The LAG B’omer celebration was wonderful; everything was perfectly organized. Most importantly, the Jewish community of Kishinev took another step closer to Judaism through this event.”
Yocheved, a resident of Kishinev and the director of the Chabad school, expressed her joy: “Yesterday’s celebration of LAG B’omer was simply spectacular. The parade and the barbecue in the park were the highlights. It was my first time at a LAG B’omer event, and it was amazing. The atmosphere was full of gratitude and kindness. One woman shared with me that thanks to our efforts, she started attending Shabbat prayers at the Chabad synagogue and participating in women’s programs.”
The celebration of LAG B’omer in Kishinev was not just a festive event but, as Rabbi Zushe Abelsky, chairman of the community in Moldova, concluded, a significant step towards strengthening the Jewish community. The celebration fostered a sense of belonging and spirituality, marking an important moment of connection and growth for all involved.
