I Am Content with My Fate

Every time I meet one of the representatives of the large family of the principal rabbi of Chisinau and Moldova – Rabbi Zalman Abelsky, I am impressed with the solidarity of the members of this family and their loyalty to the commandments of Torah and Jewish traditions. This time in Chisinau, the younger daughter of the rabbi Zalman and the Rebetzin Lea, Mrs.  Hana Zalmenov visited. This young, blooming and always smiling woman gave me a cordial welcome. She was with her two children – six-year old son, Leivi and her two-year old daughter, Baruha-Sneiura. I was very shocked when I found out that Hana is actually the mother of ten children. When she saw my reaction, she said, ”for the present, only ten.”

From these ten children, three of them are girls and seven of them are boys. Two of the older ones have already been in Chisinau and helped the Rabbi Zalman in preparing the Paisah last year. The eldest is already 18 years old. I have asked Hana if she has had other interests than her family, because raising ten children is certainly not a piece of cake! She answered that this kind of question is quite natural, because the Jewish wives always actively help their husbands.

Now she takes care of her children, but she is also a teacher, and when she is free, she happily gives lectures on Jewish traditions. But in general, she is fond of sewing and the embroidery of men’s headdresses (caps).

In the photo, dear readers, you can see the finished work of rabbi Zalman’s daughter. It’s a pity that in our newspaper, we can’t show you the all beauty and glow of these completed caps.

Hana’s husband works at the enterprise of transports, and he is very well-known within his speciality. He goes on trips very often, and Hana stays at home taking care of her children and doing all house work. She goes abroad very seldom, but her sons go abroad as the messengers of the Rabbi. I look at Hana and I see the picture of a true Jewish woman. Look how her children make her younger and blooming!

I asked Hana what she wanted to say to the women from Moldova and she answered, “I am content with my fate and I wish the same happiness to all families.”
