Chanukah of Light and Joy with Chabad Moldova: A Celebration of Tradition, Unity, and Uplift

This past Chanukah was not just a celebration of tradition and light in Moldova, but also a powerful testament to the Jewish community’s ability to come together, rejoice, and strengthen the values of faith and hope. organized by Rabbi Shneor Zalman Tefenbrun, Chabad Moldova orchestrated an incredible series of events that brought joy and inspiration to hundreds of participants in Chișinău and beyond.

The festivities began with a grand ceremony at the Great Synagogue of Chișinău, led by the Chief Rabbi of Moldova, Rabbi Mendel Axelrod. The lighting of the first Chanukah candles was a powerful moment, and Rabbi Axelrod’s moving words about the triumph of spirit over matter and light over darkness added great depth to the evening. Guests enjoyed a festive meal, live music, and joyous dancing that united everyone in celebration.

One of the highlights was a special evening dedicated to the women of the community, where the light of the candles was paired with stories of inspiration and resilience. The participants shared personal experiences, enjoyed traditional treats, and deepened their bonds in an intimate and uplifting atmosphere.

In the streets of Chișinău, a grand Chanukah car parade lit up the main thoroughfare, Stefan cel Mare Street. Cars adorned with illuminated menorahs drove through the city as onlookers joined the festive spirit. The light of the parade symbolized the community’s unity and hope, even in uncertain times.

During the holiday, the Great Synagogue of Chișinău became a central hub for travelers. One memorable moment was when a group of visitors on their way from Uman arrived with musical instruments. Their spirited Chanukah melodies filled the synagogue with joy and created a moment of heartfelt connection for everyone present.

The fifth night of Chanukah featured an extraordinary celebration, where a giant menorah was lit in front of dozens of families and children wearing festive Chanukah hats. The highlight of the evening was a “rain” of chocolate coins that delighted the children, followed by a mesmerizing fire show that left everyone in awe.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Rabbi Shmuel Zalmanov, the joy of Chanukah reached travelers at Chișinău International Airport. Hundreds of people were offered sufganiyot, menorahs, and the chance to light candles, turning their journey into a moment of light and celebration.

Simultaneously, in Bender and Tiraspol, despite regional tensions, Chanukah brought joy and light. Rabbi Mendel Gotzel led the events, which included menorah lightings, home visits, and mezuzah installations. One touching moment was the visit to a local Jewish family, where a mezuzah was affixed to their door, leaving a lasting impact.

A standout event was a special Chanukah party for Young Professionals, organized by Rabbi Shneor Zalman and Chana Tefenbrun. This unique gathering brought young Jewish professionals together to connect, celebrate, and experience Chanukah in a vibrant and modern atmosphere.

Beyond the festivities, Chabad Moldova also embodied the spirit of giving and care. During the holiday, they assisted an Israeli family whose grandmother underwent a difficult surgery, providing them with food, menorahs, and emotional support throughout the holiday.

This year’s Chanukah in Moldova was a shining example of light that continues to spread and strengthen, not just through the menorahs but also in the hearts of all who participated.

💛 Let’s continue to share the light and joy of Chanukah throughout Moldova! Happy Chanukah to all!
