100 YEARS SINCE THE KISHINEV POGROM

On 9th Nissan, 5663 [1903], over fifty Jews were murdered, Shuls were looted, and sifrei Torah were desecrated in the Moldovan capital, Kishinev. It took the Jews of Kishinev many years to get over the after-effects of this terrible pogrom.

This week the city’s Jewish community held a series of events to mark the centennial of this tragic event. These began when the President of Moldova,Vladimir Varonin, along with visitors from around the world, looked on as head shaliach Rabbi Sholom Ber Freiman recited Tehillim and Kaddish at the local Jewish cemetery.

Later on there was a round-table discussion between the representatives of all of the Jewish organizations working in Moldova, which was also attended by the local mayor Grigory Orkian. Rabbi Zalman Abelsky, local shaliach and chief rabbi of Moldova, opened the discussion by saying that as we are already in the era of Moshiach, the best thing to do in memory of those who were killed is to work with a positive attitude to bring about the revelation of Moshiach.
